The nine-day myth: what Dutch incorporation actually takes for a foreign founder

Nine days. That is the number you will hear for incorporating a Dutch BV, and it is real: it comes from the World Bank's measurements of the standardised domestic case. A Dutch resident with a Dutch bank account, standard articles and a notary appointment can indeed be operational in about nine days.

You are not the standardised domestic case.

For a foreign founder, the same steps run one to two weeks once the document package is complete. That last clause carries the whole sentence. Legalised and apostilled documents from your home jurisdiction, certified translations, ultimate-beneficial-owner declarations for a foreign parent company: the package is the project. Incorporation by power of attorney works well, and a well-prepared founder never has to fly in for the notary. But nobody incorporates on documents they have not gathered yet.

And then there is the business bank account, which nobody plans for. For a company with a foreign parent, compliance review at a Dutch bank can take considerably longer than the incorporation itself. Anyone who promises you a bank account in nine days has not opened one for a foreign parent company lately.

None of this is a reason to stay home. It is a reason to sequence. A structured landing starts the bank-account track in parallel with the entity work, prepares the document package before the notary is ever involved, and plans the first hires around the timeline you will actually have, not the one on the formation-agency banner. The slow steps are only expensive when they surprise you.
